Why are we doing this?
Surge Radio has been broadcasting in and around Southampton University for 50 years, founded as a pirate radio station in the depths of Glen Eyre Hall's F-Block. Since then, Surge Radio's presenters have gone on to do amazing things, with alumni such as Chris Stark and Spencer Kelly, with many more working behind the scenes. Many of our students use Surge as an outlet for creative expression, developing their confidence, communication and media skills, all whilst having fun on the job! However, with funding becoming increasingly stretched and licensing getting ever more expensive, we need to fundraise to keep SURGE going for many more years to come!
Hear from Our Members: Anika
Hello! My name is Anika, I am a first-year law student, and I joined SURGE in 2026! I started my own show called ‘Masala with Anky’, which focuses on filling the gap for a South-Asian show playing Indian (primarily Bollywood) music and discussing the latest or upcoming Bollywood movies!
So far, my show has been a great hit, and I truly enjoy making my weekly set list and interacting with my listenership via the Instagram account I created! Surge radio for students has been a way to either be a passive audience where our RJs and music help them lock in better, or an active audience that participates in weekly games, engages with posts and makes requests! For me, Surge has been a way to explore and express myself through my favourite medium - music - and witness such immense support from family and friends! Those two hours of creating a setlist and sitting in that studio almost transports me into a different world!
I have such great fun creating posts for my personal radio show; the love and support from the current committee is what motivated me to apply for the next academic year! I cannot wait to continue working in Surge, further than an RJ, and actually have more people know about this amazing student radio!
